Pulsed Dose Rate Brachytherapy – Description of a Method and a Review of Clinical Appli- Cations

چکیده
Pulsed Dose Rate (PDR) treatment is a new brachytherapy modality that combines physical advantages of high-dose-rate (HDR) technology (isodose optimization and radiation safety) with radiobiological advantages of low-dose-rate (LDR) brachytherapy. Pulsed brachytherapy uses a stronger radiation source than that employed in LDR brachytherapy and provides a series of short 10 to 30 minutes long exposures every hour amounting to approximately the same total dose in the same overall as that administered in the LDR. Modern afterloading equipment offers some advantages over interstitial or intracavitary insertion of separate needles, tubes, seeds or wires. Isodose volumes in tissue can be created flexibly by a combination of careful positioning of the catheter and by adjusting the dwell times of the computerized stepping source. Automatic removal of radiation sources into a shielded safe eliminates radiation exposures to staff and visitors. Radiation exposure is also eliminated to the staff who previously loaded and unloaded a large variety of radioactive sources into the catheters, ovoids, tubes etc. This review, based on summarized clinical investigations, analyses the feasibility, differences between methods of brachytherapy and preliminary clinical applications of PDR brachytherapy.

Calculation of absorbed dose rate in the lungs, ribs and skin by the mammosite applicator in breast cancer brachytherapy with MCNP
Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. Brachytherapy is one of the ways to treat breast cancer. In brachytherapy treatments, high-dose sources are used in interstitial placement. Here, Iridium-192 is used. This source emits gamma rays with energies ranging from 136 kV to 1060 kV electron volts. The activity of the used spring is 10 Ci. The simulated ...

Pulsed dose rate (PDR-BT) treatment is a brachytherapy modality that combines physical advantages of high-dose-rate (HDR-BT) technology (isodose optimization, radiation safety) with the radiobiological advantages of low-dose-rate (LDR-BT) brachytherapy. Pulsed brachytherapy consists of using stronger radiation source than for LDR-BT and producing series of short exposures of 10 to 30 minutes in...
متن کاملProof of Symmetric Dose Distribution in Mammosite Applicator in Breast Brachytherapy with MCNP Simulation
Introduction: In brachytherapy treatments, high-dose sources are used in interstitial placement. In this paper, the modeling of a common breast cancer treatment applicator called MammoSite is done by the Monte Carlo simulation code. Then, to study and calculate the amount of doses in the breast and the dose rate of the organs at risk of radiation, including: lungs, ribs and ski...
متن کاملDetermination of Dosimetric Characteristics of IrSeed 125I Brachytherapy Source
Introduction Low dose rate brachytherapy sources have been widely used for interstitial implants in tumor sites, particularly in prostate. Dosimetric characteristics of a new IrSeed 125I brachytherapy source have been determined using the LiF thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD) chips. Materials and Methods Dose rate constant, radial dose function, and anisotropy function around the IrSeed 125I so...
متن کاملDosimetry of 188Re and 186Re sources based on Monte Carlo calculations for endovascular brachytherapy after balloon angioplasty
Background: Recent pre-clinical and clinical studies indicate that irradiation in the dose range of 15 to 30 Gy can reduce rate of restenosis in patients who have undergone an angioplasty. The use of filled balloon with radioactive solution was proposed as one of the possible intravascular irradiation techniques. Materials and Methods: The Monte Carlo N-particle Transport Code (MCNP4b) was used...
